Romance or Love Story
Is it a romance or a love story? Is there even a difference? I think there is. When I think of the genre of romance I see a big bucket that holds all kinds of stories dealing with the heart and emotions. Then there are many sub-genres included in this over arching topic like contemporary, historical, and paranormal. But I think we are missing one important sub-genre: the love story.
Now you may be asking, “What’s the difference? They’re both about love and they both have happy endings.” While this is true, the way they both deal with emotions and relationships as the stories are told is quite different.
Let’s look at a love story. In a love story the reader is taken on an emotional journey through the heart of the characters. While they may end up with a happily-ever-after they will typically go through quite a bit of emotional turmoil and lessons learned before they reach the end. Danielle Steele writes amazing love stories. The ending is usually very happy and the main characters find peace and love. But the stories revolve more about the characters feelings than the journey they had to go on.
Throughout a romance, however, the reader goes on a journey with the destination a happy ending. While the emotions of the heart are definitely present, the reader is traveling along the romantic road as the love grows with the characters. So rather than the main focus being the deep feelings you see in love stories, a greater part of the tale is focused on the adventure of the romance that takes the characters from beginning to their happy ending.
Even though I love both types of stories, my favorite is a romance. I enjoy taking the excursion with the characters as they reach their happily-ever-after. After all, life is a journey; why not add a little romance to it!
