He’s clear: if Krishani doesn’t accept that he’s a Ferryman, he’ll become what they Ferrymen fight—a Vulture. Filled with grief, Krishani sets out on a quest to find the Flames before the Valtanyana take them. When Krishani comes face to face with the enemies that ravaged Avristar, he challenges them. He knows he doesn’t have a chance, but it’s his last stand before he gives in and becomes a Vulture.

The last thing Kaliel remembers is the white lightning eyes of Crestaos. She wakes on a battle field pressed against the only boy she’s ever loved. He’s different, everything is different. She begs Krishani to take her to Avristar, only to find they’ve been exiled. Krishani is forced to be the Ferryman, and doesn’t know when he’ll return. Kaliel tries to enjoy life on Terra, but the longing for Krishani gnaws at her. He won’t tell her what he’s become, but it’s her fault he’s a monster. Temptation forces Kaliel to betray everything she’s ever known to save him, giving the Valtanyana exactly what they want.
