Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Have you ever been to a party where you didn’t know anyone? Sitting there with an uncomfortable smile on your face while all those around you are sharing tales of past exploits and childhood adventures. Do you remember when so-and-so did this? And have you heard from you-know-who? Struggling to keep up with unfamiliar names, places and stories can be dizzying for someone outside the loop.

But what about when you get together with your old friends after a long separation. All of you truly know each other: the funny, the embarrassing, the tearful stories. All of them. You’re in a place where everybody knows your name just like on Cheers.

I think that’s sort of the appeal of series and trilogies. When you read a good book and you develop an emotional attachment to the characters, you want to meet up with them again. You want to curl up with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and revisit those intimate ties. It’s familiar, it’s comfortable and it’s exciting to put the new puzzle pieces together with the old to see how the picture changes with life.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

If my mom calls me up and says, “Did you see the new Malory?” I know immediately that Johanna Lindsey has a new historical featuring the Malory family. Heck, I don’t have any idea how many books there are in that series, but if it’s about the Malorys I have to read it.

I think it’s only natural that I’ve developed that sort of attachment to my own characters. The twists and turns of having the cast reenter the stage are limitless. I mean, I know these people and imaginary though they are, Devan, Kent, Jill, Langston, Doc, and Roon are family now. I know that at any moment I can call one of their names and they’ll be front and center, ready to weave their way back into my imagination.

About the Author: Olivia Hardin realized early on how strange she was to have complete movie-like character dreams as a child. Eventually she began putting  those vivid dreams to paper and was rarely without her spiral notebooks full of those mental ramblings. Her forgotten vision of becoming an author was realized when she connected with a group of amazingly talented and fabulous writers who gave her lots of direction and encouragement. With a little extra push from family and friends, she hunkered down to get lost in the words. She’s also an insatiable crafter who only completes about 1 out of 5 projects, a jogger who hates to run, and is sometimes accused of being artistic, though she’s generally too much of a perfectionist to appreciate her own work. A nativeTexasgirl, Olivia lives in the beautiful Lone Star state with her husband Danny and their puppy Bonnie.

  2. I remember the first series I got hooked on as a kid was Nancy Drew, and I would get so wrapped up in her adventures that I would stay up all night on the weekends just to finish a book. Its so easy to get lost in their world when its a good author :)

  3. The Mallory family is a must read. This is why I love series books. I become so emotionally involved in the characters that I can’t wait to read the next book in a series because it’s like meeting up with old friends and/or family. Imaginary they may be but they have become a part of my fantasy. lol I enjoyed this post and now I will have to wait a couple of days to get the Cheers song out of my head. :)

  6. Thanks for the guest post :)

What an apt analogy comparing a series to a place where everyone knows your name. The only series I remember reading voraciously was Sweet Valley High when I was a tween. As a kid, I enjoyed the Little House books and the books of Beverly Cleary. As I got older, I was hooked on one of the series by VC Andrews. I still love her books but I’m hopelessly far behind.

That being said, I also enjoy stand-alones and being introduced to new characters. But, I’m not comfortable in social situations where I don’t know a soul but everyone knows everyone else.

The authour is so lucky to be able to have movie-like dream and be able to remember them! I seem to have very detailed dreams, but the longer I am awake, the more they fade away! Even trying to describe them right when I wake up I can never seem to articulate everything I remember from them! I bet that is a very handy tool to have for a writer! =)

  8. Bitten Shame reviewed by Olivia Harden. Olivia inspires me to meet these people and know them as well as she. “Where Everybody Knows My Name” got my attention right away and that is what prompted me to read the review. Thank you Olivia for such a good review.
