My Baby Compass by Kathryn Thorson Gruhn is an in-depth guide to helping your child “think, speak, move and thrive.” But not only that, its also peace of mind. I really enjoy reading books like this. I’m always looking for information, tips and ideas to help my children become good learners so when this book came up for review I was excited and curious.
My Baby Compass as a book is extensive. It includes such things as:
- Checklists to track milestones
- “On the go” activities
- Suggested toys, games and rhymes
- Research based facts for parents
- Progress charts to share with your health care provider
- Guides if your child needs help
When I first received my copy I was a little concerned. My son is only 3 1/2 years old and this copy clearly says ages 4-7. So I wasn’t sure if it would apply to me yet. However the book includes information and a separate checklist for children ages 3-4. The book also explains that your child may not be able to do everything on the checklist yet it gives you a good idea of how they are progressing. It was nice to see how my child compares to the “average”. I know that every child is different and the book does make it clear that as long as your child keeps progressing you need not be to concerned. However if you are concerned the progress charts are detailed and great tools to bring with you to see your health care provider.
I really liked the activities in the book, they were original and when I tried them with my son they were fun. One of the activities is Picture Pairs and Phonological Awareness. I was so impressed with how well my son did! He enjoyed doing the activity with me as well, it really made learning fun. Also at the back of the book were separate booklets containing checklists and other activities that I also thought were great.
I guess my only complaint was that it was a really dry read. I found parts of it hard to stay focused on and other parts were long and drawn out. Don’t get me wrong though, the information was great and I am happy to know it.
Overall I would recommend My Baby Compass to anyone who is curious or concerned about their child’s progress. Or anyone who wants to encourage learning in their child.
