What Children Need to Learn to READ by Michelle Valene is an excellent resource for parents to help their children become successful readers. I received the birth through early grades edition and I was thrilled with what I found.
Reading is BIG in my house. I read my kids a minimum of 4 books a day. I want them to know that reading is fun and important. However from time to time I worry that I’m not doing enough to ensure they will be good readers themselves. One of my biggest fears is either of my children struggling to read and therefore learn. Needless to say I was very excited to review this book.
What Children Need to Learn to READ definitely helped alleviate a lot of the fears that I had. The book contains basic tips, and a very helpful Language Accomplishments check list. Now I know that not all children are the same, and I know that they all develop differently but for me the list was a small peace of mind that “Yes we are on the right track!”
Also included are baby and toddler games to help build cognitive and pre-reading skills. There were classic games like Simon Says but there were also a few that I had never of and I look forward to trying them with my kids. There are also nursery rhymes, activities, and tongue twisters all to help your child grow and develop their language skills.
I would have to say the best part of the book was the resources at the back. There are lists of cook books, joke books, and reading activity websites all for you and your child to enjoy! Plus so much more!
What Children Need to Learn to READ is a plethora of information and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for new ways to ensure a good reading future for their child. Or anyone who just wants to have a lot of fun with their kids!

We have always been big readers and both of our kids read a lot too. Now that the grandbabies are coming along and I have much more time to spend with them, this would be a useful book for me.
WOW I think this would be great for my Friends would love this help for teaching their son. They are like you and read him tons of books but they want to help him take the next step
I think a book to teach kids how to read books is sort of ironic, but I can understand how it may help some mothers with pointers on how better to approach the learning curve for young toddlers.
I personally have worked with so many kids in different age groups that teaching them how to read is going to be awesome. I’ll end up with a little librarian :-)
I love to read and my grandson who is 4 loves me to read books to him . He remembers most of them all and sometimes will read them back to me ( in his own words). I always have lots of books for my kids and also now for my grandchildren as well. This sounds like a wonderful book full of things that will help me teaching them to read.
Thanks for the review! My twins are learning to read now and I appreciate the resource. I also read a lot of books to them!
What a great resource for helping children learn that reading is FUN!
Would definitely give this book a read!
Sounds like an interesting book, and I really think it would be good for my sister and sil who plan to homeschool. :)
