King Interview with R.J. Larson:

If a movie was made about your book, who do you picture playing the lead roles? Why?
Ioan Gruffudd as Akabe, King of Siphra, particularly as portrayed in the movie, King Arthur–his cloak and the wild hair and slight beard were perfect. Anne Hathaway as Caitria, a vulnerable pawn in her father’s quest for power as he matches wits against Akabe. Alyssa Bernal–Ela, prophet of Siphra and the vanquished city-state of Parne. Henry Cavill is the actor who most closely resembles Ela’s beloved, former ambassador, Kien Lantec. However, I still haven’t seen an actor who truly resembles Kien–suggestions welcomed!

Do you bake? If so, box or from scratch?
Both! I love to bake–and I’ve had my favorite yeast bread recipe memorized since age seventeen.

For this series, I even developed a griddle-bread recipe for Ela, my young prophet as she is trying to feed crews of starved prisoners.

My family eats these warm, like tortillas

Ela’s griddle bread

2 cups whole wheat white flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 tsp crushed herbs if desired (Dill, cumin, or rosemary.)
3/4 cup hot water

Grind herbs together with salt. Ela prefers rosemary. Measure flour into large bowl. Using wooden spoon, stir herb-salt mixture into flour. Add olive oil. Gradually stir in enough water to make a soft, elastic dough, adding a few additional tablespoons of hot water if dough seems dry.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Divide into 10 portions, or 8 for larger servings. Roll each piece into a ball, then cover with a damp towel.

Let the dough and its baker rest for ten minutes.

Pat down rounds, flattening them.

Heat a griddle or iron skillet over medium heat until hot. On a flour dusted surface, use a floured rolling pin to roll out rounds of dough until very thin. Brush griddle with your preferred oil. When oil smokes, cook each round until dough bubbles and brown spots form, about 30 seconds. Flip the bread and cook the other side. Repeat with remaining rounds.

Serve warm. Becomes crisp when toasted.

Have you ever written anything that you thought would be controversial and found it wasn’t?
Yes. And yet one particular verse that I used almost verbatim from scriptures in Jeremiah HAS prompted some commotion from readers who insist it’s not Biblical. Part of the reason I’ve found the Books of the Infinite series to be such a blessing is that I’ve been able to dig into tough verses and place them in context within my young prophet’s experiences–as inspired by actual verses. ;)

Who designed the cover of your book?
The Bethany House design team. What an awesome and creative group! Opening the files for each cover has been akin to receiving an amazing birthday present. Bethany House also welcomes input from their writers; the whole experience has been incredible and fun throughout the Books of the Infinite series.

Cable, Satellite, Antenna or Netflix?
Antenna! My husband and I agreed years ago that if we subscribed to cable or tapped into Satellite fare…we’d be sitting in front of the History Channel for the remainder of our lives–not necessarily ideal, tempting as it sounds. :D

What does your workspace look like?
My workspace is usually moveable. I decide where I’ll be most comfortable or productive each writing day, and I settle down and write. I do have a small desk upstairs with my printer, files, research books, and supplies, but I rarely sit there while writing.

What’s your favorite thing about Summer?
Fresh fruit, salad, and warm weather! I know, that’s three, but somehow, for me, they are permanently linked. I love salads and would eat them as my main dish at every meal, if my family would cooperate.

What are your favorite go-to recipes for everyday dinners?
My family loves tacos, grilled meat and potatoes with veggies. In the winter, my crock pot is always full and simmering on the counter. Potato soups, bean soups, hearty stews–my husband loves them with toasted french bread!

What genre does your book fall under?
Biblical fantasy fiction. An unusual spin for inspirational fiction, but I’ve loved every minute of writing this series; it’s been a great learning experience, and my relationship with my Creator has been deepened by this venture into the fantasy realm as I explore cherished stories from the scriptures.

Against his wishes and desires, Akabe of Siphra has been chosen by his people to be King. But what does a warrior know of ruling during peacetime? Guided by the Infinite, Akabe seeks to rebuild the Temple in the city of Munra to give the sacred books of Parne a home. But dangerous factions are forming in the background. To gain the land he needs, Akabe must forsake the yearnings of his heart and instead align himself through marriage to the Thaenfall family.

Meanwhile, Kien Lantec and Ela Roeh are drawn still closer together…while becoming pawns in a quest to gain power over the region. As questions of love and faith become tangled with lies and murderous plots, each must seek the Infinite to guide them through an ever more tangled web of intrigue and danger.
