These bountiful slices of bread also do not contain any high fructose corn syrup or artificial colors or flavoring. Is there even another brand of bread that offers the same thing? Before I get started on how to create this quick and easy sandwich, I’m going to tell you a bit more about how Oroweat got started. Oroweat began making their wholesome goodness in North Hollywood, California in 1932. One small baker started making whole wheat bread during the Great Depression and started delivering them door to door. The business grew quickly and their bread is now available in supermarkets across the western US.
8 slices of Oroweat Whole Grain 100% Whole Wheat Bread, cut in circles reserve ends for bread crumbs
3 5 ounce cans of canned chicken or 2 cups chopped cooked chicken
1/2 onion, diced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 cup bread crumbs, made from reserved bread ends
1/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/3 cup shredded pepper jack cheese, divided
1. In a large bowl mash chicken with a fork. Stir together chicken, bread crumbs, onions and all seasonings and set aside.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and milk. Pour wet mixture into bowl with chicken and stir until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Then form into 4-6 patties.
3. In a large skillet heat oil over medium heat and cook patties 3 to 4 minutes per side. Add cheese during the last minute of cooking. Then remove from heat.
4. Serve on toasted bread with a salad, or your favorite fruits and vegetables on the side.
