How to Make the Perfect Frozen Hot Chocolate

Frozen desserts are one of my favorite ways to cool off during a hot day or to satisfy my sweet tooth after a nice home cooked meal. Fortunately for me, there is no shortage of yummy recipes to choose from when the mood strikes. Whether you’re a fan of decadent chocolate creations, fruity concoctions or something in between, there’s a frozen dessert recipe floating around Pinterest that was made just for you. Recently, on the hunt for a new milkshakes recipe to try out for myself and my family, I was reminded of this delicious recipe for Frozen Hot Chocolate.

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

If you have never had Frozen Hot Chocolate, you are missing out. Wonderfully icy and with just the right amount of chocolate, this recipe is a great way to enjoy the traditional hot chocolate that you love in the middle of summer or any other time of the year you desire! Doesn’t that just sound divine?

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Frozen Hot Chocolate


3 ounces of your favorite chocolates (recommended: Ghirardelli)
2 teaspoons Cocoa mix, (recommended: Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate & Cocoa)
1 tablespoon sugar
1½ cups whole milk, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups ice cubes
Whipped cream, for garnish
Marshmallows, for garnish
Chocolate sauce, for garnish (recommended: Ghirardelli Chocolate Flavored)


1. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and melt in a small saucepan or in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Stir until melted. Add the cocoa mix and sugar, stirring until blended.

2. Remove from heat and slowly add 1/2 cup of the milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.

3. In a blender place the remaining cup of milk, the chocolate mixture, vanilla extract, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth, about 1 minute.

4. Pour into mugs and top it off with some whipped cream, marshmallows, and drizzle with chocolate sauce. Serve immediately and enjoy with a spoon or a straw!

Frozen Hot Chocolate Tips

  • Substitute white chocolate mix for the cocoa mix.
  • Drizzle your glasses with chocolate sauce before pouring the frozen hot chocolate into the mug.
