The Upside of Regret

Brighton and Leah have been the best of friends since seventh grade. Where Brighton is the quiet one who is focused on school, Leah is the bold and daring one who craves the adoration of an audience. It’s always worked for them, until now.

Heading into their senior year, Brighton is challenged with an opportunity that can change the course of her future. The only problem? She just might have to step out of her best friend’s shadow.

But when Leah doesn’t support the choices she makes, Brighton is forced to reevaluate what true friendship is.

Brighton is changing and exciting doors are opening. A new world of music, friends, and even love are falling at her feet. But it’s hard to enjoy it when Leah’s life is spiraling out of control.

Now Brighton must try to not only save her friendship, but also her friend, before it’s too late.

The Upside of Regret Excerpt:

“Hey,” a smooth voice called out from somewhere close to me.
I jumped at the sound, suddenly looking around to see if my parents were within my eyesight. Slowly I turned and looked around, and spotted a guy to my left a couple of cars over.
“Hey?” I answered, back looking around only to see that I was the only one there.
“Got a cigarette?” he asked.
“I don’t smoke,” I said, the sound of disgust evident in my tone.
“Neither do I.”
“Then why did you ask me for one?”
“Well, all I had was ‘hey,’ and I didn’t have a plan for if you answered,” he said as he walked closer.
He was average height, medium build, and as he lingered closer I spotted a dimple in his right cheek. He was dressed in all black, which—considering the heat—made me sweaty just looking at him.
“Dylan North,” he said when he was in front of me with his hand outstretched.
I stared at it for a second before I remembered my manners. “Brighton Whitman.”
“Nice to meet you, Brighton,” he said casually.
“Yeah, you too.” I lifted my chin in the direction of the gathering. “So you had to come to this thing, too?”
“Had to?” He scoffed and shook his head. “More like dragged. Forced. Threatened with bodily harm.”
My eyes shot open and he started laughing.
“Not really. Well, about the bodily harm part. But yeah, my parents made me come.”
