Welcome to Shadow Fire Author Kimber Leigh Wheaton! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer some questions about your life and book!
Kimber Leigh Wheaton is a YA/NA author with a soft spot for sweet romance and is a member of Romance Writers of America.
She is married to her soul mate, has a teenage son, and shares her home with three dogs and four cats. No, she doesn’t live on a farm, she just loves animals. Her house is filled with dragons, though she does lament that they are the porcelain, non-flying variety.
Kimber Leigh is addicted to romance, videogames, superheroes, villains, and chocolate—not necessarily in that order. (If she has to choose, she’ll take a chocolate covered superhero!)
Her debut novel, Shadow Fire, is the first book in The Light Chronicles series. Watch for book two, Stolen Moon, a standalone sequel, coming soon.
Shadow Fire Interview with Kimber Leigh Wheaton:
Welcome to Cuzinlogic! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
I am a video game addict who loves cars, travel, superheroes, and animals. I’ve been writing off and on as far back as I can remember. Two years ago my passion and drive kicked in full gear and Shadow Fire is the result. That momentum hasn’t passed yet. I have two more novels due out this summer, one in July and one in August.
Please tell us in 20 words or less, why we should read your book.
Shadow Fire is a lighthearted, fun adventure with a touch of whimsy and a sweet romance.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I enjoyed writing the interactions between the characters quite a bit. The three main characters all have strong personalities which made for some interesting dialogue.
What kind of research (if any) did you have to do for this book?
Though I loved archery in high school, it’s been a while and I was out of practice. I did some online research into the correct terms, distances, bow types, string types, etc. In addition, I went to the archery range and shot a long bow, a recurve bow, and a crossbow before deciding which to have as Ashlyn’s main weapon.
What Inspired you to write this book?
My inspiration for the story came from playing a few too many RPG video games—it’s quite apparent in the plot. Though I call it a fantasy romance, Shadow Fire is an adventure more than anything else.
If you could visit anywhere in the world for 1 week, where would you go?
I’d love to take a Baltic cruise. I’ve always wanted to explore my Norse ancestry. Cruising through the fjords would be amazing. Not sure if a week would be long enough, though.
Tell us something about the book or main character that isn’t mentioned in the synopsis.
Shadow Fire started out as a ʺChoose Your Fateʺ novel. In the beginning Ashlyn got to choose between two wickedly hot mercenaries to escort her on her quest. As the story progressed, I had so much sadistic fun torturing and killing the characters in creative ways. But once the manuscript reached 180,000 words and had so many convoluted plot lines it looked like an inner city road map, I had to scrap the idea. But don’t worry—the sexy mercenary I dropped from Shadow Fire has a starring role in the second book, Stolen Moon coming August 2014.
Do you have a favorite line or quote in this book?
ʺThe villagers will be awaiting my return, skulking in the shadows, desperate to catch a glimpse of the walking dead girl.ʺ
What makes a book appeal to you?
I’m a cover gal. A cover will make or break a book for me. I know, I know, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. Well, I fail miserably at that. After the cover comes the blurb. It needs to be short, to the point and catchy. Nothing I hate more than a rambling blurb that reads like a long synopsis. There are so many books out there, especially since I’m a book blogger. If the book doesn’t catch my eye, it’s on to the next.
If you could get front row tickets to watch any performance live, who would you like to go see?
I’d love to see Idina Menzel’s new Broadway musical If/Then.
What’s your ‘guilty pleasure’ TV show?
I really like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. I know it’s getting mediocre reviews but I still enjoy watching it every week. It probably has something to do with my comic book addiction.
Who designed the cover of your book?
Amanda Matthews from AM Design Studios //www.amdesignstudios.net
She also designed the cover for Tortured Souls which will be revealed in June. I absolutely love her designs. The Tortured Souls cover was perfect on the first try. She really sees my vision and turns it into an amazing cover.
What can your readers expect from you next?
My YA paranormal romance, Tortured Souls, the first book in The Orion Circle series, is coming July 2014. It is the first book in a series of standalone novels about a group of paranormal investigators. The second book in the Light Chronicles series, Stolen Moon, is due out August 2014. Stolen Moon is a standalone sequel to Shadow Fire and features cameos by the three main characters.
