4 Fun Staycation Ideas for Families

Vacations can be expensive, especially for the entire family, and sometimes you just don’t have that much money to spend on one, so you take a staycation instead. Staycations, a vacation in which an individual or family stays home or nearby, though, can be boring if you don’t plan them right. But with a little preparation and know-how your family staycation can be a great one! Check out these 4 staycation ideas for families to get everyone up and out and away from your normal routine.

Spend a Day at the Amusement Park

Nothing says FUN like spending a day with the whole family at the amusement park. While Disney World may not be in the budget this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a day of fun at a nearby theme park. Go early and stay late! Each family member can pick at least one ride or attraction to visit and the whole family can do them together. Check out Theme Park City to find an amusement park in your state.

Go Camping

No, you don’t have to load up the family and head to the campgrounds, you can just step out into your backyard and have a night of fun. Camping in the backyard is less expensive than traveling to a campground and paying for gas and a fee for tent space. Plus you can make it a party by inviting family, friends, and neighbors. Let children bring friends to help keep them occupied.

On the big night wait until all of your guests arrive to pitch your tents. If you don’t have a tent of your own, make a DIY one. You can even make it a competition where the first to finish wins a prize. Once everything is setup and everyone is settled in grill some burgers and hot dogs and roast some marshmallows for S’mores. Then tell ghost stories, sing campfire songs, play games, and have a great time camping without electronics. No TVs, tablets, phones, video games or laptops allowed. The idea is to engage in activities that you would engage in on an actual camping trip. However, going to the bathroom indoors is an absolute must.

Have a Takeout and Movie Night

Don’t cook and don’t go to a movie. That’s too expensive, too boring, and takes a lot of time away from just relaxing. Instead, spend a night (or even a whole day) ordering everyone’s favorite foods and watching movies. Have each person choose at least two movies, stay in your pajamas, and have a family day doing nothing in particular.

Take Some Classes

Is there something you’ve been interested in learning? A cooking class, gardening, yoga or painting, perhaps? The possibilities are endless. Sign up for a class while on vacation to indulge your soul and make it a family event. One perk is that you may find something you want to continue, adding a little excitement to your life and carrying over into a hobby that you can keep up, not just something you do once.

Going on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t have a fun adventure. All it takes is a little imagination and some planning ahead. Enjoy your staycation and treat it like a true vacation, not just another ordinary week at home!
